Stream, river, moss: Determination of location

There is confusion about the streams: the location of their bed, their existence or not. Due to the climate that prevails in Greece and especially in the southern and eastern parts of the country where rains are rare but intense, the streams seem to be permanently dry. At the time of the storm, few may notice their usefulness for the immediate drainage of rainwater.

The location of the stream bed is often the subject of disputes between landowners on either side of the riverbed. This is because it is possible to change the course of the stream for various natural or artificial reasons. In cases of rubble deposits or in systematic embankments on one side of the stream, its course changes. Our office has been recorded and has occupied a case where the entire riverbed has been embanked and a multi-storey building has been constructed exactly in the old flow position. In case of heavy rainfall (with a statistical frequency of 25 or 50 years) it is possible intense phenomena with new riverbeds to open in unlikely places.

In case of issuance of a building permit to a property that has a current limit, it is necessary to determine the current limits by the competent committee.

With the study of photo interpretation we can trace the exact course and location of the stream in the past. During the last 60 years at least we can identify key features of streams or rivers. Basic sizes such as width, depth, path and draw cross sections (if required).
Finally, with a series of inspections in various services we can obtain material for the determination of the location and the route of important streams over a period of up to 150 years.
